One of the most iconic and popular greek islands in Greece is Santorini, where pristine beaches, awe-inspiring sunsets, and rich cultural experiences await families seeking an unforgettable trip. Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Santorini is more than just a dreamy backdrop for romantic getaways—it's also an ideal destination for an enriching and enjoyable family vacation. From its famed black sand beaches to traditional Greek food, this island offers an array of family-friendly activities and sights that will leave every member of your tribe mesmerized.
What part of Santorini is best for families?
Santorini offers several areas suitable for families, but the towns of Fira and Oia are often favored. Fira, the island's capital, has just about everything you need from restaurants, shops, and quick service places to eat but with this convenience comes the crowds. I also recommend staying in Fira if you have small children as Oia is not suitable for small children due to the steep stairs. Many of the accommodations in Oia will not allow for small children so if you do decide to stay in Oia with little ones be sure to check with your hotel or vacation rental host first to check what their policy is for little ones.
If you have older kids, Oia is also a popular option. Oia is known for its stunning sunset views and picturesque streets. When you think of Santorini, Oia is probably what you’re picturing in your mind.
Where to avoid staying in Santorini?
If you don’t like large crowds, Fira and Oia are probably not the best option for you and your family as they can both become quite crowded with cruisers once the cruise ships dock. So if you’re looking for a more peaceful experience consider staying in Perissa or Kamari. Both are also good choices as they have beautiful beaches and a more relaxed vibe, making them suitable for families seeking a beach holiday. You could also stay in Imerovigli. It’s a fantastic place to stay in Santorini! It's a quieter, more relaxed town compared to Fira and Oia, offering stunning views of the caldera and the famous Santorini sunsets. The town has beautiful whitewashed buildings, charming narrow streets, and a selection of upscale hotels and villas, making it an excellent choice for a more peaceful and luxurious stay. While it may not have as many shops and restaurants as Fira or Oia, it's a great option if you’re seeking a more peaceful atmosphere with your family without sacrificing the breathtaking views.
How many days are enough in Santorini?
The ideal duration for a Santorini trip can vary based on personal preferences and what you want to experience. However, I recommend spending around 3 to 5 days here will allow you and your family to explore the island's main attractions, soak in the stunning views, visit the picturesque towns, enjoy the beaches, and experience the local culture and cuisine without feeling rushed. We personally spent 3 full days here and could have easily spent a few more days seeing more of the island.
What is the best way to get around Santorini?
You can get around Santorini either by renting a car, taking a taxi, private car service, or taking the bus. If you plan to stay in areas like Fira and Oia you won’t need a car as everything you need will be within walking distance. However if you’re looking to stay outside of these popular tourist areas or want to see other parts of the island with the most ease and flexibility, renting a car will be your most economical option.
You can also get around Santorini by taking a taxi or private car service. Taxis are plentiful in Santorini but it’s a good idea to arrange your pick up and drop off transfers ahead of time especially if you are arriving in Santorini via the ferry. If you wait until you arrive at the ferry to grab a taxi the rates will be significantly more expensive. You can ask your hotel to arrange a taxi to pick you up from the ferry port or you can arrange one yourself through Get Your Guide.
You can also take the bus around the island as well if you want to save some money on private ground transportation. Santorini has a public bus system that connects the major towns and villages on the island. The bus service is a convenient and relatively inexpensive way to travel around Santorini.
The main bus station is in Fira where you can catch buses to various destinations such as Oia, Kamari, Perissa, and Akrotiri, among others. The buses usually run frequently during the tourist season, but schedules might vary during the off-peak months. You can check the schedule HERE.
Although you may see Donkeys taking tourists up and down the steps of Santorini it is best to avoid this form of animal cruelty. Donkeys as a form of transportation are often subject to strenuous work, heavy weights to carry, kept in harsh conditions, with a lack of proper care in some cases and limited access to shade and water. Although his activity may appear to be family friendly, it is best to avoid it on your trip and take the cable cars instead which are just as efficient and fun for the family.
Is Santorini or Mykonos better for families?
If you’re traveling to Greece as a family I would highly recommend Santorini over Mykonos. Mykonos is known for its vibrant nightlife and because of this it is extremely expensive and often overcrowded. Consider Mykonos the Vegas of Greece, so while it does have family friendly activities like watersports and entertainment, Santorini is better for families seeking a quieter and more picturesque setting.
Is Santorini very expensive?
Santorini can be relatively expensive compared to other Greek islands due to its popularity and the demand for its stunning views and luxurious experiences. Accommodation, especially in towns like Fira and Oia with caldera views, tends to be pricier, particularly during the peak tourist season. If you’re looking for an island with beautiful views and beaches at a more affordable price point, consider Naxos, Paros, or Syros which have more of a local population and are not as crowded.
What is the cheapest month in Santorini?
The cheapest months to visit Santorini in terms of lower accommodation prices and fewer crowds are typically during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to early June) and fall (September to October). We personally went in October and the weather was perfect and while it was still busy, the crowds were much more manageable.
When you visit in the shoulder season, accommodation prices will also tend to be more reasonable compared to the high season of summer (especially July and August). I also find that it’s easier to get upgrades as the prices will be much lower and you may find better deals on flights and activities as well, especially at the very end of the shoulder season (mid to late October)
Is Santorini any good for families?
While the island is often associated with romantic getaways, there are several family-friendly activities available. We thoroughly enjoyed our time as a family (even with a toddler) here and had so much fun and would recommend it to any family coming to Greece. From exploring the charming villages, taking boat tours around the caldera, visiting beaches like Kamari or Perissa, and experiencing local cuisine in family-friendly tavernas, Santorini is a great family friendly destination.. I highly recommend staying at the Katikies Garden Hotel in Fira . We stayed in two different room types, the Garden Suite Private Pool room and the Honeymoon Jetted Tub Suite with the Sea View. Both room types were spacious and plenty of space for the family to stretch out outdoors and relax in your own private pool. If you have smaller children I recommend the Garden Suite over the Sea view as there is grass in the Garden Suite and not as slippery as the patio in the Sea View suites.
We also stayed at Ethos Vegan Suites which was an excellent stay right in the heart of Fira. While there aren’t any stunning views here like you’ll find at Katikies, the hospitality is absolutely incredible! The hotel is family owned and they will treat you as such when you stay with a homemade breakfast fit for royalty! Everything in the hotel is sustainable and ethically sourced down to your bathroom soap. The owner will also make sure your little one is right at home with a crib, baby friendly amenities, and their own tiny sized room service platter. You will absolutely love your stay here and walk away feeling like you gained new family members as the owners are truly just that kind!

Santorini's sunsets are legendary, captivating visitors from across the globe, and watching this breathtaking spectacle as a family is an experience that weaves togetherness with the island's natural wonders. One of our favorite memories from our trip was watching the sunset. I always heard that Santorini has the best sunsets but I honestly didn't think it would live up to the hype but it truly does! You and your family will love watching the sunset as it gently dips below the horizon, painting the sky with hues of orange, pink, and gold. It is truly a sight to see and the best place, in my personal opinion, is to watch it at Volkan on the Rocks in Fira. After you watch the sunset, you and your family can enjoy a free screening there at the Volkan Cinema of Mama Mia which plays every night at 9pm.
